Josephine Baker was born Freda Josephine McDonald on June 3rd, 1906 in St. Louis, Missouri. After performing in chorus lines in St. Louis and Harlem, she moved to Paris in 1925 and quickly gained fame due to her bold dancing and brazen costumes.
Josephine had a pet cheetah named Chiquita who she used to take for walks along the streets of Paris. Chiquita even had a fabulous diamond-encrusted collar. (Lucky cat!)
During World War II, Josephine worked as a spy for the French resistance. She relayed information overheard between German officers during her performances and exposed French officials secretly working for the Germans. It was also rumoured that she smuggled secret documents written in invisible ink on her sheet music. After the war, Josephine was awarded the Croix de guerre (the French military honor) for her service.
Josephine was a strong supporter of the American Civil Rights Movement and racial equality. Over the course of her life, she adopted two daughters and ten sons of various nationalities and races. She referred to her family as an “experiment in brotherhood” and the “Rainbow Tribe.”
In 1975, Josephine celebrated 50 years in show business with a retrospective revue in Paris. Just four days after the show, Josephine suddenly passed away due to a cerebral hemorrhage. She was the first American woman to receive full French military honors at her funeral.
Benjamin: It’s like I was playing some kind of game, but the rules don’t make any sense to me. They’re being made up by all the wrong people. I mean no one makes them up. They seem to make themselves up.
just rushed like a crazy mofo to get that last post in by 9pm!
Yeah so Philip Defranco is this American guy who has a show on youtube where he talks about news and current events mainly in the U.S. but he also does big international stories. He recently turned 26 and is a December baby like me and he spoke about how he accomplished a lot and how he felt old. Now I have to say that everything I know about him I found out from his videos and his tumblr blog. I’ve only been following him for a 4months so if I get things wrong excuse it and move on, correct me if you must! I didn’t research him like I would do a famous actor or singer simply because he’s like a news reporter with a personality to me. For example he watches Game of Thrones, Doctor Who and is a total Apple fanboy! Although while writing this I wanted to see if he would be in google news search results and I found that channing tatum shows his bare arse in the vow! Now I wasn’t planning on seeing this film but im going to make time now. Now back to Philip, his personal life is interesting, he met his beautiful girlfriend through youtube (she recently made a video for valentines day about their relationship so far), he was pre-med but quit because he simply didn’t enjoy it; he had weight problems during childhood and his father has PKD; but his catchphrases, opinions and editor are what makes me watch his videos every morning before I say my prayers. A quick word about MattyHomeyer his editor: he’s a subtle stud. You only have to see Defranco Does Dublin to realise that. I was also very annoyed that I didn’t pay attention to youtube most viewed lists earlier because I only found out about him right as he finished his meet-ups in Europe. Anyway Matty if you see this, im single ;D. The first show I watch was called white girls dont meth around, and i was hooked i spent the next 3 hours watching his old videos on his channels sxephil, PhilipDefranco, liketotallyawesome (which doesn’t exist anymore). Something that really shocked me was that I was listening to this guy and I didn’t stop for one second to think my goodness he’s talking in an American accent and I’m sitting here listening to it! Instead he was taking the mick out of rednecks and Texans! I guess it was just so different to the news in that, it didn’t have any dramatic music and someone reading a tele prompter in a slow and clear tone, he was saying ‘clickity-clack’, ‘wtf something-type peoples?’ and my favourite ‘bitches be crazy!’.
AND thats what makes him a BAMF! he’ hold my attention, he keeps me entertained and makes me want to find out more about stuff that matters to me. In some respects he has completely different views to me for example he’s for the death penalty and he’s not into religion majorly, he also owns a gun (im completely against them) but he never fails to preach common sense which is where I feel im completely on the same wavelength as him. Eventhough when you scroll through his videos you’ll notice that they will include some scantily clad woman in one way or another- DONT BE PUT OFF! He actually talks sense and I now have a girl crush on Kate Upton:
Exhibit A His video on the phrase ‘chink in the armour’ and how it related to New York Knicks basketball player Jeremy Lin, compared to Hadley Freeman’s article about “deep seated racism against asian-americans”
I’ll be the first to admit that when he says something that I would question I always flashback to the episode in The Good Wife when Grace is learning about Jesus from some internet idiot who sort of brainwashes her a little bit! If you don’t know what im talking about get up to date, son! Philip will know what I’m talking bout, he watches it :P Im not saying he brain washes us, after all the nation loves him- not least because he throws something at our face at the end of each show.
It’s coming up to a month after he launched his new channel Sourcefed, which has more pop culture news but no more that 20minutes a day. It has 3 regular hosts: Joe Bereta, Elliot Morgan, and the hot and hilarious Lee Newton. They’re not as good as Philip but they’re not the worst presenters ever. After all they are awesome in their own way and im definitely going to be proud to say I was there from the start!
The best quote from him in my opinion is “Speak today, because you might not have a voice tomorrow.”
So Philip if you read this answer me one question, my friends don’t watch The Good Wife- do you think Alicia Florrick is a Bitch or a BAMF?
Thanks for reading, if you did, my 18 followers of which 7 i know!

Well it’s even hard for me to believe the fact that I have been studying for a MONTH on the three exams I had this month! I gave up TV, facebook, YouTube, even the lovely tumblr to some extent, but now the wait is finally over. It is 19th of January and as of 1454 today I was free. Free from scheduling, study sessions, sacrificing TV shows to not go over my 2hours a day allowance. I have never studied this hard for any exams, I looked up past papers and merged the mark scheme with it, turned up to school when I didn’t have lessons so I could discuss topics with class mates, listen to recordings of notes, put the notes on the internet so I could access it at night without having to pick up a book, cleaned my room so I could focus on studying better, miss school (you think this is bad but let me explain) because the travel time there and back is 80 minutes and wouldn’t be able to revise while travelling, stop listening to music because I didn’t want to hear Taylor swift’s ‘this love is ours’ while defending the UK’s uncodified constitution. SIDE NOTE: I love Taylor. …aaaand we’re back so now that this strain on life is over for now here’s what I’m doing to celebrate:
(*disclaimer: this is from 2010 but i dont have any recent pictures of us together on the computer, although not much has changed she’s still head and shoulders taller than me, i still have a side fringe, she smiles, i look cynical- but she has a better camera =D)
Don’t live like there’s no tomorrow, that’s stupid. But live your life like it’s a story that you would want to tell someone else. A little fun, a little exciting, a little sexy, and always off key.
I could tell you that Adventureland is one of the best movies of the last ten years and I could tell you The West Wing is the greatest TV show ever and you might agree with me but you probably wouldn’t. Greatness is personal. There are no right or wrong.
But occasionally the whole world agrees on greatness. Shawshank Redemption is generally perceived by everyone with a pulse to be the definition of cinematic greatness. Why is that? Why of all the movies does Shawshank transcend? Don’t throw phrases at me like, “It has universal themes.” So what!!? When I was eight I wrote a story about a goldfish which won the Olympics. It had universal themes. It sucked.
Despite the fact that Shawshank has a collective thumbs up — there will undoubtedly be some who think it sucks. Are they insane? Or are the rest of us all wrong? I mean, who knows!? Citizen Kane is generally perceived by most to be a work of genius. I think it blows! It bores the hell out of me! It was ahead of its time, so what!!? So were Hitler’s V2 rockets. Doesn’t mean I have to love them. This is the other problem: exclusion. When the world is certain something is great and you think it sucks, where does that leave you?
What is in Shawshank Redemption and The Godfather which makes them immortals of film history? Will there be more films like this? It’s getting harder. The marketing people cram films thick and fast into our faces so we’re convinced The King’s Speech is the greatest thing ever until we watch it a year later and realize it’s just an average movie.
Is it about universal themes and good direction and heartfelt acting? Or is it just a big piece of luck? Go write three stories now and then show them to your friends. One might suck, one might resonate deeply, and the other might not make any sense. That’s just how life is. It’s all random and nonsensical.
I like tea, English-style. Teabag. Water. Milk. Sounds easy, right? I think I make a great cup of tea. But say I have six cups of tea a day. Even though the formula is simple, they all taste different! Often I go days and weeks without a PERFECT cup of tea even though I am an expert at making them. I guess that’s how movies are. You can put Pacino and De Niro together and every sign is that you’re going to get Heat, but sometimes you end up with Righteous Kill. What is that about?
Anyone with talent, hard work and dedication can make something good. And it’s possible to be GREAT and to win over your core audience. i.e. – the core group of music lovers who love Almost Famous and High Fidelity. But those films don’t resonate with everyone. More people like Shawshank than Almost Famous even though personally I love them about the same.
You can’t plan to make Casablanca or It’s A Wonderful Life — and I don’t think you can honestly tell me exactly what it is that makes them so wonderful and powerful. They just are. It’s a greatness that gets reached maybe once in a lifetime. And The King’s Speech didn’t reach it and neither did Juno or whatever flick gets hyped next year. There is an intangible and unreachable magic, and no-one knows what it is or where it is or what it looks like. But occasionally, somehow, it lingers — somewhere. And we all wait for it. We don’t need to go looking.
